Screens, Stress & Your Child’s Nervous System
Screens have become a normal part of childhood. Tablets, phones, video games, television, YouTube, and other forms of digital technology can be incredibly useful. They can help children learn, communicate, create, and connect with the world around them. But as parents, it is worth asking an important question:
What happens when a child's developing nervous system is constantly being stimulated by screens?
Children are not simply smaller adults. Their brains and nervous systems are developing at an incredible rate, and the experiences they have each day help shape the way they learn, focus, regulate emotions, interact with others, and respond to their environment.
The goal is not to make technology the enemy. It is to understand what a developing brain needs and make sure screens are not crowding those experiences out.
It's Not Just About Screen Time
When we talk about screens, it is easy to focus entirely on the number of minutes a child spends on a device. But the bigger picture matters. What is the screen replacing?
Is it replacing outdoor play? Is it replacing sleep? Is it replacing family interaction? Is it keeping the brain stimulated right before bedtime? Is it becoming the primary way your child copes with boredom, frustration, or big emotions?
The issue is not necessarily that screens are "bad." The concern is that a child's nervous system needs a variety of experiences to develop well. Kids need movement. They need conversation. They need physical challenges. They need time outside. They need connection with other people. They need opportunities to solve problems. They need creativity. They need quiet.
And sometimes, they simply need to be bored. That last one can be particularly difficult for parents. We live in a world where boredom can be solved almost instantly by handing a child a device. But boredom is not necessarily something that needs to be fixed. Sometimes boredom is the doorway to creativity, imagination, and independent play.
What Are Screens Actually Stimulating in the Brain?
This is where the conversation becomes especially interesting. Our brains are designed to pay attention to things that are new, rewarding, emotionally significant, or potentially important. Digital media can take advantage of these systems extremely well.
Bright colors, sounds, rapid scene changes, notifications, points, likes, rewards, new characters, new videos, and unpredictable outcomes can all provide repeated signals to the brain that essentially say, "Pay attention. Something interesting is happening."
These experiences engage networks involved in attention, motivation, reward, and learning.
One important player is dopamine. Dopamine is often called the "pleasure chemical," but that description is overly simplistic. Dopamine is heavily involved in motivation, reward prediction, learning, and reinforcement. When something is novel or rewarding, dopamine signaling helps the brain determine that the experience is important and worth paying attention to.
This is one reason digital entertainment can be so compelling for children. A video game may provide points, sounds, visual rewards, new challenges, and immediate feedback. Short-form videos can provide an entirely new piece of content within seconds. Notifications create anticipation before a child even knows what the notification contains.
The problem is not that dopamine is bad. Dopamine is essential. The concern is what happens when a developing brain repeatedly practices seeking rapid, predictable rewards.
There is also an important distinction when we talk about "neurotransmitter depletion." It is common to hear that screens or video games "drain dopamine" or cause children to have low dopamine. The science is more complicated than that. We do not have good evidence that ordinary screen use simply depletes a child's dopamine supply. A more accurate way to think about it is that repeated exposure to highly rewarding environments can influence reward sensitivity, motivation, and what the brain learns to expect from an experience.
In other words, the brain adapts to what it repeatedly experiences. That principle is incredibly important when we are talking about childhood.
When the Brain Gets Used to Constant Stimulation
Imagine spending an entire afternoon riding the world's fastest roller coaster. After several hours of intense stimulation, you get off and sit on a slow, quiet train. The train has not suddenly become worse. But after hours of intense stimulation, it may feel boring.
Something similar can happen when children move back and forth between highly stimulating digital entertainment and everyday life. If a child's brain becomes accustomed to constant novelty, rapid feedback, and immediate rewards, slower activities can feel comparatively unrewarding.
Reading a book does not change every few seconds.
Building a fort takes time.
Drawing a picture requires imagination.
Learning to ride a bike requires repetition.
Playing outside does not provide a notification every 30 seconds.
Playing with siblings requires negotiation.
These activities may not provide the same immediate reward as a highly stimulating digital environment, but they are incredibly valuable for development.
This is why researchers are interested in the relationship between heavy screen exposure and executive functions such as attention, working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility. The research is complex, and associations do not necessarily mean screens are directly causing these difficulties. Children who already struggle with attention or self-regulation may also be more likely to seek out highly stimulating digital entertainment.
Still, there is a valuable principle for parents to remember: The brain becomes very good at whatever it repeatedly practices.
If we want children to develop the ability to focus, wait, create, problem-solve, and tolerate frustration, they need opportunities to practice those things.
Screens Can Steal Something We Don't Talk About Enough: Creativity
One of the biggest concerns about excessive screen use is not necessarily what children are doing while they are on the screen. It is what they are not doing while they are on it.
Children are naturally creative. Give a child a cardboard box and it can become a spaceship. Give them a stick and it becomes a sword. Give them a blanket and two chairs and suddenly they have built a fort. Why? Because there is no predetermined path. The child has to decide what happens next. That is very different from many forms of digital entertainment.
The characters are already created. The world is already built. The storyline is already established. The sounds are already provided. The next challenge is already waiting.
Even interactive games often give children a predetermined set of choices, objectives, and rules.
There is nothing inherently wrong with that. Games can teach strategy, coordination, problem-solving, and other valuable skills. But children also need experiences where there is no predetermined path.
They need to invent games.
They need to make up stories.
They need to negotiate rules with siblings.
They need to figure out what to do when nobody has told them what to do.
They need to experience the frustration of not knowing what comes next—and then discover something themselves.
That is where imagination, creativity, flexibility, and independent problem-solving can develop. This is one reason I believe parents should be cautious about using screens as the automatic solution whenever a child says, "I'm bored." Boredom creates space for the brain to create.
The Developing Nervous System Needs Both Stimulation and Recovery
A healthy nervous system is not one that is constantly stimulated. It is one that can adapt to stimulation and then return toward a state of rest.
Think about exercise. We would never expect a child to exercise at maximum intensity all day without rest and expect their body to thrive. The nervous system needs a similar rhythm.
Stimulate. Recover. Explore. Rest. Move. Connect. Repeat. When children spend large amounts of time consuming fast-paced digital content, especially when it replaces sleep, movement, outdoor play, or social interaction, they may have fewer opportunities to practice slowing down and transitioning into a calmer state.
Sleep is especially important. The evening is supposed to be a period when the body and brain gradually transition toward rest. But when a child goes directly from an exciting video game or rapid-fire videos to "Okay, time for bed," that transition can be difficult.
Screens can also contribute to later bedtimes and reduced sleep, particularly when they are used close to bedtime. And sleep is not optional downtime for a developing brain. It is an essential part of learning, memory, emotional regulation, and physical development.
This can create a frustrating cycle:
More stimulation → harder to wind down → less sleep → greater fatigue → poorer emotional regulation → greater reliance on easy entertainment.
A tired child often has a much smaller capacity for frustration, focus, and self-control.
What Can Parents Do?
The answer does not have to be throwing every device in the garbage.
Technology is part of our world, and our children need to learn how to use it wisely.
Instead, parents can create an environment where screens are one part of childhood—not the center of it.
One of the simplest places to start is by protecting the beginning and end of the day. Rather than making a screen the first thing a child experiences in the morning, give them opportunities for movement, sunlight, breakfast, conversation, and connection. In the evening, create a predictable wind-down routine that allows their nervous system to gradually shift from activity toward rest.
It can also help to create certain screen-free spaces and times. The dinner table is an obvious one. Bedrooms can be another. Family meals, outdoor adventures, car rides, and conversations are opportunities for children to practice being present without constantly reaching for stimulation.
And when your child says, "I'm bored," resist the urge to immediately solve it. You don't have to provide the entertainment. Keep art supplies accessible. Have books within reach. Keep balls, bikes, building materials, puzzles, and games available. Let them play outside. Let them help cook. Let them build something. Let them get dirty.
You may hear, "There's nothing to do!" That's okay. Give them time to figure it out.
Eventually, the cardboard box becomes a fort. The couch cushions become an obstacle course. The backyard becomes an adventure. The child who was "so bored" 15 minutes ago suddenly has an entire world they've created.
Parents can also look for opportunities to shift children from consuming to creating when screens are being used. Taking pictures, making digital art, creating music, coding, building something in a game, writing a story, or producing a video are very different experiences from endlessly consuming one piece of content after another.
The goal is not perfection. It is balance.
Movement is another powerful tool. Children need opportunities to run, climb, jump, ride bikes, play sports, walk, explore, and use their bodies. Movement does more than exercise muscles. It gives the developing nervous system sensory information, coordination challenges, vestibular input, proprioceptive input, and opportunities to interact with the physical environment.
Children were designed to learn about the world through their bodies, not just through their eyes.
And perhaps one of the most powerful things parents can do is make real life interesting again.
Go outside with your kids.
Build something together.
Take them hiking.
Play a game.
Cook together.
Read together.
Let them help with projects around the house.
Give them opportunities to work with their hands.
Children often want connection more than entertainment.
Set Boundaries Before the Screen Comes Out
It is much easier to establish expectations before a child starts playing than to negotiate those expectations once they are deeply engaged. Parents can decide ahead of time when screens are allowed, where they are allowed, what types of content are appropriate, and when they need to be turned off. Consistency matters.
Your child may not always like the boundary. That does not mean the boundary is wrong.
Part of growing up is learning that we do not always get what we want immediately.
And if screen transitions consistently turn into major battles, that can be useful information. It may be worth looking at the type of content being consumed, the length of the session, the time of day, whether the child is tired or hungry, and whether screens have become their primary source of entertainment or emotional regulation.
Rather than focusing exclusively on a specific number of minutes, pay attention to what changes when your child's screen exposure changes.
Do they sleep better?
Do they play more independently?
Are they more interested in being outside?
Are they more creative?
Is it easier for them to transition between activities?
Do family interactions improve?
Your child can give you a lot of information about whether your family's current technology habits are serving them well.
The Goal Isn't a Screen-Free Childhood
Technology is not going away, and it does not need to. The goal is to raise children who can use technology without needing technology to regulate them.
Children need to know how to be entertained without a device. They need to know how to tolerate boredom. They need to know how to sit quietly. They need to know how to play. They need to know how to create. They need to know how to move. They need to know how to interact with other people. They need to know how to experience frustration without immediately escaping it. And they need opportunities to develop all of those skills while their brains and nervous systems are still developing.
The research surrounding children's screen exposure continues to evolve, and the science is not as simple as saying "screens are bad." Some digital activities can support learning, creativity, connection, and specific cognitive skills. At the same time, excessive or poorly structured screen use can displace sleep, movement, imaginative play, face-to-face interaction, and other experiences that are important for development.
The type of content, the context, the timing, and what the screen is replacing all matter.
So perhaps the better question isn't simply:
"How much screen time is too much?"
Instead, ask:
"Is my child's digital life leaving enough room for everything else their developing nervous system needs?"
Because children don't just need more stimulation. They need movement, connection, creativity, challenge, quiet, rest, and real-world experiences.
